Habitat Facts |
|
Welcome
to the home page for information
related to MPUMC's
2008 Habitat for Humanity efforts.
This year, we'll be building another
Habitat house—and that includes funding
half the full cost of the house and
supplying all labor. Construction will
begin in November.
For
information on how to
find
the house and help build the house,

DID YOU KNOW? Habitat for Humanity is
a “hand up” not a “handout” program.
Participants in the homeownership
program are required to attend training
and invest “sweat equity” into building
homes.
Each year, Knoxville Habitat for
Humanity accepts about 60 potential
homeowners into the program to qualify
for a new home built by community
volunteers. Potential homeowners
are low-income applicants who cannot
otherwise afford decent housing, but who
could pay about $350 a month for 25
years.
|
How it works: Three principal
requirements are evaluated for potential
homeowners:
Habitat for Humanity houses are
affordable because they are:
Habitat for Humanity houses are "no
frills" simple, decent houses with:
-
insulated walls,
ceilings,
crawlspaces and windows
-
easy to maintain
design and materials
-
modern fixtures
and appliances
Habitat for
Humanity houses are home to over 300
local families who:
-
attended
budgeting, construction and home
maintenance classes
-
invested
500 hours of "sweat equity"
-
built
their own home with the help of
Habitat for Humanity friends

INFORMATION
about what to bring and what to
wear will be located next to the sign-up
sheets when they are posted at the
church. Volunteers can also
contact
Jennifer Hartwig directly at 670-6694 or
by email at
jennhartwig@comcast.net. |
WHAT TO
WEAR: On the construction site, everyone must
wear CLOSED TOE SHOES. No sandals or
flip flops are allowed. Work boots are
best but some people prefer wearing
sneakers while working on the roof. Long pants or shorts (weather
permitting) and old shirts are
appropriate. HFH will provide safety
glasses and hard hats.
|
|
Weather policy:
Work will only be cancelled at
the job site. If it is raining or
snowing, volunteers, partner families,
and crew leaders should still come out
unless the conditions are hazardous.
|
WHAT TO
BRING: Please
bring your hammer, work gloves and a
nail apron if you have them. You may
also want to bring a tape measure,
pencils, retracting utility knife and a
speed square. If you do not have any
tools, please do not purchase any as HFH
will also supply tools on site.
|
|
Volunteers
must be 16 to work on the site
and 18 to use ladders and/or power
tools. Each worker must also complete
and sign a Release of Liability form and
turn it in on their first work-day.
Download the waiver here and
remember to bring it with you!
